Ceramic workshops in the south of France

Discover our different ceramics internship packages

Nestled in the heart of the castle grounds, our ceramics workshop is housed in the estate's former water collection reservoir (dating back to a time when running water was still a distant dream), which has been renovated for this purpose. Its large bay window overlooking the park and our centuries-old linden tree invites contemplation. The spacious adjoining terrace allows us to enjoy sunny days and put the finishing touches on our pieces outdoors.

We offer a friendly, lively atmosphere where we’re here to listen to your needs. We can cover a range of techniques, depending on the length of your stay and your expectations.

A comprehensive range of equipment is available to course participants:

  • A clay roller allows you to work with clay slabs, ensuring perfect consistency and thickness down to the millimetre

  • 2 large-capacity professional potter’s wheels

  • An electric kiln

  • Various engobes

  • A wide range of glaze colours, some of which we have developed ourselves

  • Of course, all the tools you need to create effects on your pieces: sgraffito, cutting, stamping, stencils, cookie cutters, etc.

You have two options:

  1. You already have in mind the piece or pieces you wish to create:

    • Together, we will look at the techniques and the time required to create them,

    • Depending on your level of skill, we will start with a demonstration of the required techniques, followed by a supervised practice session

    • Nathalie will then guide you step-by-step through the creation of your pieces

  2. You don’t have a specific idea of what you’d like to make:

    • Depending on the duration of the course you’ve chosen and your level of proficiency with the various techniques, we’ll discuss your options to suggest different decorative or functional items. We have several models and photos of pieces created by Nathalie or participants from previous sessions.

    • Depending on your level of skill, we’ll start with a demonstration of the techniques involved, followed by a guided practice session

    • Nathalie will then guide you step-by-step through the creation of your pieces

That little extra touch:

If you wish, we can offer you a full package, including accommodation, breakfast and dinner. Please don’t hesitate to contact us for more information! The price is calculated based on the duration of the course you choose.

2.5 + 1 days course
Up to 4 people

During this course in pottery wheel throwing and stoneware modelling, held in a friendly and relaxed atmosphere, come and create unique pieces that reflect your own style*.

This course will give you the time to produce more complex pieces, combining different techniques (slab building, wheel throwing and hand-building). As it is split into two separate sessions, you will also be able to complete your pieces in full, including glazing.

The course, lasting 21 hours, is divided into two separate periods:

  1. Over two and a half consecutive days, you will have the opportunity to try out various techniques for modelling and/or wheel throwing and trimming, finishing and decorating your pieces, and then to perfect a particular technique

  2. About a month later, once your pieces are thoroughly dry and Nathalie has carried out the first firing (the ‘bisque firing’), you will agree on a fourth day dedicated to glazing your pieces.

From the initial idea to the finished piece, Nathalie will guide you step by step through your project to ensure you achieve a result you can be proud of!

Depending on the participants’ expectations and their level, various techniques may be covered, including:

  • slab work (using a rolling pin)

  • throwing

  • modelling

  • coil building

  • engobes

  • trimming

The programme

Day 1: 9h-13h / 14h-18h

Welcome with a hot drink, followed by an explanation of safety guidelines and best practice in a ceramics workshop

A quick theoretical overview of working with stoneware with Nathalie: advantages, limitations, characteristics… everything you need to know to ensure success!

The group then splits into two for around 1½ hours:

- In the ceramics group: everyone makes their own teapot from stoneware slabs (already provided), supported and guided by Nathalie.

- Meanwhile, the watercolourists sketch the various stages of production and the atmosphere of the workshop, with help and advice from Isabelle.

- Then we swap roles: the watercolourists make their teapots whilst the potters sketch the scenes in the workshop.

One-hour lunch break, taken together.

In the afternoon, we swap roles following the same principle as in the morning:

- The first group finishes making and decorating the teapot, whilst the other group continues to capture these moments in watercolour (it is also possible to stroll through the park and paint the views, weather permitting).

- Finally, the groups swap roles after around 1½ to 2 hours

This mixed workshop allows us to adapt to each participant’s pace: decorating and finishing the teapot, working on the watercolour sketchbook in more detail... it’s up to you!
